OCR: Rats and mice (families Cricidae - New World; Muridae - Old World) are among the most common desert mammals. Their small size enables them to dig and live in underground burrows to escape the heat, and some species like the kangaroo rat (Dipodomys species) and gerbil Gerbillus gerbillus can survive without drinking water for long periods. Rodents also conserve water by not sweating. Kangaroo rats get their name from their long back legs which they use to hop about.
